Urgent Rescue Operations Underway in Bronx Building Collapse

A six-story building in the Bronx suffered a partial collapse on the afternoon of December 11, prompting a massive response from over 200 firefighters. The collapse occurred at 1915 Billingsley Terrace, near Phelan Place, in Morris Heights at around 3:38 p.m. Rescue teams, including NYPD drones, are currently scouring the site for any individuals trapped under the rubble. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.
Mayor Eric Adams and Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh are on their way to the scene. Kavanagh commented on the gravity of the situation, noting the building was in active use and mixed-use, thus raising concerns about potential occupants. A scaffold around the building, part of which fell after nightfall on Friday, has been a focus of the rescue efforts. The building has a history of violations, with 48 recorded since 1984, including two active DOB violations related to facade safety.
Authorities urge residents to avoid the area while the emergency operation continues. The Buildings Department is also investigating the cause of the collapse.
